Laser treatment for pigmentation removal is a popular, non-invasive cosmetic procedure that targets excess melanin in the skin to treat dark spots, melasma, freckles, sun damage, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In Indian (Fitzpatrick IV–V) skin types, pigmentation is common, but care must be taken to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or burns.
DC Clinic uses lasers for pigmentation treatment for acne marks, general skin tanning, melasma and other superficial to moderate depth pigmentary problems. Lasers emit specific wavelengths of light that are absorbed by melanin (pigment) in the skin. The light energy breaks down the pigment particles, which are then cleared by the body’s immune system over time.
Commonly used laser for Indian skin types includes Q-switched 1064 nm laser, Picosecond 755/1064nm laser. The laser heats the skin. The pigmented area specifically takes the heat and breaks the pigment cell. However, this required multiple sittings depending on the servity of the pigmentation.
Post-procedure care included using sunscreens and moisturisers and other active ingredients as maintenance therapy to prevent the pigmentation from worsening. Laser for pigmentation should be done at regular intervals and the number of sittings depends on the severity of the pigmentation
